Wero’s growing partnership reach

Digital wallets don’t yet have as strong adoption in Europe as they do in some other regions, but Wero, a project from the European Payments Initiative (EPI), is looking to change that. Despite having launched less than a year ago, it is already seeing growing industry support – and has seen multiple partnership announcements in recent weeks and months.

Initially only available in Germany, Belgium and France, with plans to expand to other countries in the EU, Wero is designed to enable customers to send and receive money between participating bank accounts within the region in less than 10 seconds for free. It already has more than 40 million registered users across the three countries.

Wero’s list of participating banks is already in the double figures, including ABN Amro, BNP Paribas and ING, however the recent addition of Revolut is one of a smaller number of neobanks to connect to the platform. Revolut will offer the solution to its customers in Germany, Belgium and France, and is likely to broaden this as Wero rolls out in other countries.

While it initially launched as a P2P payments wallet, the EPI plans for Wero to expand to support ecommerce payments in H2 2025, with plans for in-store payments, subscriptions and loyalty programmes in 2026. Other recent partnerships further this aim, with Worldline and Nuvei both adding ecommerce merchant acceptance capabilities.

In our recent report with Money20/20 on the future of cross-border payments infrastructure in Europe, we found that industry experts have a high opinion of the potential of the platform. Of those surveyed who had heard of Wero, 71% expect it to have a significant or moderate impact on the future of payments in the continent.
